Question My new Parrotlet is afraid of my hands

I have had my Parrotlet, Keike, for five weeks. He will come to me when I call him, eat millet from my hands and sit on my shoulder. He has come a long way, as I have been working very hard to earn his trust, and make him feel safe.
However...Keike is terrified of my fingers and hands, and will either flee or try and bite me when I try to touch him. I need some advice on how to solve this issue so that I can teach Keike to step up.

Thumbs up

Hello and welcome.

P'letts have an innate fear about hands. They grab! They are big long monsters that resemble snakes with multiple eyes.
Let us know more about your birdie, Keike.
How old is he? Did you get him at a pet store? Was he tamed before you got him?
Does he know how to Step up?
Read some of the other forums to the left of this screen. Training and Bonding is a start.

Thanks David and Bogie!

Keike is about 12 weeks old, and I got him from a very good breeder. He was stepping up at the breeders, and wasn't afraid of her hands. I'm thinking I must have unknowingly done something to scare him, to cause the fear of my hands.
Keike is no where near stepping up because of his fear of my hands.

Thanks for the reply and the advice!

My Huey was afraid of my hands too, I tried putting my hand palm side up and that worked. To this day I say up and put my hand palm side up and he hops on.

My hubby can use his hand top side up and Huey hops onto that so they are fickle birdies.

Nail polish and jewelry can be scary. Or he might just need some more time, keep going slow and try to entice him by holding out millet and inch closer until he sees it's not scary, then you can try getting him to step up to reach it.
Also, like Rizzie said, some birds just hate hands and you can't change it, it may not even be something you did. Try an open palm or an arm. Don't feel bad if he's like Rizzie's Huey, as long as he's happy it really doesn't matter if it's a palm or an arm or a finger.

By the way, I have two birds that are very tame and social that just HATE hands, but the arm works and they sit and crawl all over us.

And just to add, make sure your hands aren't coming at him from above, as that is scary for him. When new people want to pet Levi I have them rub their index finger and thumb together as they approach him from his eye level (I figured out early on he's less scared of finers when I do this) and he usually lets them pet his beak or cheek. Give it a try.

tijya will become famous soon enough

My parrotlet isn't so fond of hands. He will step up onto my sleeve. I will try the palms up thing though and see how that goes.
