Sunflower seeds and safflower seeds

Jabba used to eat a few sunflower seeds. He has always refused safflower seeds. The only seed mix he likes are the same ones I feed my budgies. I am not worried because he eats pellets and a variety of fresh food but I just wondered if anyone else's p'let prefers budgie seed mix?

Hello, Grace. It depends on the budgie mix. I do know that a p'lett needs a lot more than most budgie mixes can offer. P'letts are parrots. Parrots need a more diverse diet.

I have a Volkmans Parrotlet seed mix and im so dissapointed with it, the #1 seed is Safflower.
I only allow 1 or 2 to sneak in the bowl a day (after I mix all the other foods in)
I feed primarily nutriberries and Goldenfeast in the cage.

If they eat to many Safflower I notice a change in the droppings too and i dont like it. Ill spare you the details.
I don't think a little Parakeet seed mixed in with a variety of stuff is bad. I do it sometimes because I have alot of different food.

I use "SunSations" natural for parakeets with probiotics. It's made by Vitakraft Sunseed out of Bowling Green, OH. It has a lot of good things for our birds---I have a parakeet, too. It has NO sunflower or safflower seeds.
Also supplemented with Roudybush pellets (small). Best to you.

I feed a sunflower-free small parrot mix. Tumi ignores the safflower seeds too, but there is a ton else in the mix that he does and should eat. He eats a ton of nutriberries as well.

Daisy is on pellets full-time now, with a small amount of freshies every day. When she and I are working on things together (like reminding her what Step Up is all about) then I give her one black sunflower seed when she does whatever it is right. She cracks the shells with glee and gobbles up the kernel! The breeder I got her from said to avoid giving any parrot the sunflower seeds that have striped hulls. They have less nutrients in them than the all-black-hull variety. I know that Daisy prefers the all-black seeds---she tosses out the regular striped-hull seeds and won't even consider them.

When we first got Jules she was on very cheap feed. Basically whatever was on sale at a box store that week. Volkmans was instrumental in getting her to a better feed, since it was a seed mixture of a good quality that she would eat. She is now on Nutriberries (various types) exclusively as far as feed goes. Of course she gets all sorts of variety as to fruits, veggies, etc also.

Ozzie, what is your oppinon of the Volkmans Parrotlet seed having so much Safflower? Did you use it primarily in the beginning because it's all she would eat, and do yiu still use it?

The seed her previous owner fed her was the cheapest they could find which mainly was whatever was on sale at walmart. The box that came with Jules broke out in moths and bugs within a week of us getting it. The replacement box made a few more weeks before bugs showed. My main purpose of Volksman was getting a seed formulated for parrotlets that was of good quality that she would eat and did not come with bugs. Volksman fit the bill and within months we could see that her feathers and health was much improved. It was not till later that I heard the issues with safflower being an issue but by then I had already moved on to Nurtiberries because of the embedded pellets. At the moment Jules eats mainly Nutriberries, some seed (Volksman), some millet, various fruits and veggies, any seeds that come from our food preparation and a little of what we eat that is bird friendly (egg, lean meat, noodle, green beans). I am not really worried about the safflower in Volksman because it is such a small part of her overall diet and I believe the seed to be of good bug free quality. If I was feeding her Volksman exclusively then I would be more concerned.

I suspect that most of the nutrition issues that we hear about are more about the casual bird owner that feeds only one type of feed exclusively than it is about us enthusiast that obsess about our birds feed and its variety. Thus if you feed Volksman only then you would have an issue because of the safflower content, if you feed pellets only you have an issue because of the moisture content, etc.
