Beaker's tabletop play tree

I think the original tree was posted in the cutting board thread. So I'll post it here again so you can compare. Beaker is now learning a little bit of independence (which really means he just wants to try and chew the keys off my keyboard or attack my mouse.) But he is also spending a little more time on his bird tree (especially with the promise of millet being hung on it) and the original just wasn't doing it. It was small and skimpy and had very little room to hang things on it. So I sat down with a drill one day and made it bigger and better!

They are visible now! I love it, you spoil your little Beaker! Not that he would accept anything less than being spoiled, of course.

How did you attach the branches to the baseboard? I've been thinking of making my boys a playstand, too!

This is awesome!! I really really really want to make a playstand tree for Levi! I was going to, but I might be moving soon so I just got a small play gym for him from the pet store. It's okay.. but I am having the same problem with not being able to hang enough things on it.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was away when I saw this and didn't think of it again until now! The branches are just attached using fairly long wood screws. I drilled out holes in the cutting board and the branches so no splitting occurred, then just screwed them together. The screws are underneath, so it didn't matter what they were made out of, Beaker would have to chew through the whole base of the branch to get at them. I also have two more smaller branches screwed into the larger, main branches and those I did with SS screws. I just drilled through the branches where I wanted them, pre-drilled the end of the branches I was attaching and put the screw through. So you can see the end of the screw on the back side of the play stand, but they are SS so its OK if Beaker chews on them. Keep in mind that the screws only hold so well, so the branches can twists a little on the base and where they were attached together. All in all it seems to work out well though, and with the proper counter weighting, the twisting of the branches isn't a huge deal. Of course it could all be glued together, but I like the idea of it being modular so I can change it up as I see fit.

Thanks for explaining! I wil have to go looking for some nice branches or roots to use for something like this!! Thought that maybe I could make a playstand that would fit in the windowsill near their cage. That way they could get to it easily and it wouldn't take up space on my desk or the floor!
Aaaaaah, your project got me all excited, Strix!
