Article about how parrots name each other

I just happened across an article by NPR about how parrots name each other, and was delightedly shocked to see that the focus was on parrotlets! Thought you all might find it interesting (though it might not be news to any of you--the video's a fun watch anyway!)

Make sure to see the video toward the end

I wonder what the effect of hand raising the bird has on the system. Do they learn their names from people then? The names are learned...does that mean that there is a chance that the name I gave my bird is his name in his head? He certainly loves saying "Hey Tumi"!

@Rubydoo252 Well, a lot of animals recognize their names, so I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe he even thinks he has two names. One for little feathered parrots, and one for the giant featherless ones.

Wow. That was so interesting and you are right...really cool that it was plets! I know that Kiwi has a very distinct set of chirps for pret-Ty-girl so she probably thinks that is her name. So what about the ones that speak human? When you think about it, it is probably part of that complex series of peeps they have to communicate and as they have learned it from their home environment, maybe it actually means what they are saying and is not just mimicking. And so why is it that the makes can "speak" more than the females? Fascinating.
