Vet Visit

Bijou & Chip just got home from their vet visit and we're all celebrating clean bills of health They had dealt with an oral bacterial issue called spirochetes, which though the vet said wasn't super serious, it could cause problems as they age. After some rounds of antibiotics, apple cider vinegar treatment and benebac their gram stains came back crystal clear!

We got other vet recommendations including doing daily flight practice (They both get several hours outside of the cage everyday but now I'm carving in some more structured flight time) as well as mixing their pellets with human grade seed versus the Dr. Harvey's that I had them on.

Thanks for reading

Thumbs up

Hi. It sounds like you have a vet that is on the ball, so to speak. Extra flight time with a purpose is always a good thing. My Bogie can't resist flying to me or my wife when we call to him. Sometimes all I have to do is make my finger look like a perch and he comes a flying!

I am glad you posted about your birdies. It reminded me that I must take Bogie to the vet for a check-up. Thanks!

That sounds great! What a cute little pair. It's nice to hear the apple cider vinegar worked for you, my vet recommended the same thing to me once and it was great. I still put it in the water occasionally when I think of it.

It's a small avian vet practice and they seem very experienced - but I also don't really have much in the way of comparison. I'm certainly happy with the current outcome though!

As far as the apple cider vinegar goes they were on a a pretty high concentration (1 tsp per 2 cups water) for about two weeks and it's supposed to inhibit bacterial regrowth. However, the vet did say that no clinical studies have been done so it's more just some people swearing by it. I think we'll go back to plain water and then I'll do a round of ACV occasionally.

Good to hear they're doing well! I'm glad the antibiotics and acv worked. Micah's also due for a check up soon, I need to make an appointment...
