Cuttlebone smells like cat pee?

I just purchased a 6 pack of cuttlebone from petsmart and it smells really bad..? I don't think the cuttlebone I got from them last time smelled like this. Should I throw it away?
Thanks

Hello!

If it is discolored, I would get rid of it or take it back to the store.

They do smell sometimes because the cuttlebone is now a part of a dead creature from the oceans.

Try slightly scraping it off ( the top layer), and see if that helps.
If you are worried, get more and smell it. Also, look at the manufactured date if there is one. Never buy cuttlebone if it is not sealed up in a container or plastic.

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply. They aren't discolored, but I decided to throw away the first 3 because they really smelled awful. The other 3 were less foul so I kept those. Good to know that they're still okay to use.

Funny story: I'm studying physics up in Canada, and one of my classmates is named David Miller!

Yes, there are a lot of David Millers out there! In my 10th grade English class, there were, get this, 5 David Millers in the same class time. The teacher called us, " David 1, David 2, etc."

I just talked to my wife and she said that she has run into that " cat pee" smell before and she did the same thing as you. She threw out the really bad ones and kept the better ones. Her parakeets shredded them to pieces and her birds were just fine!

Ewe. David had good suggestions. I'm sure they would have exchanged them. I tried some "artificial" cuttlebones, they are in the same isle, they look like cuttle bone, but it's a calcium / other vitamin thing. Tobie and Rosey like them, the others like the traditional.
