Granddaughter's Flock

Our granddaughter is a member here, but she hasn't posted in years. She is the reason we have parrotlets. Her first one had a tragic ending, when she left the house one day and forgot to shut the cage. She came home to find her drowned in the toilet. Naturally she was devastated, this was her bird, it loved her so much. Shortly after that we bought her another parrotlet, called Willa. But you never know who a bird is going to take to as their primary friend. It turned out my daughter-in-law is the primary person in the new bird's life. Well one thing led to another and my granddaughter got a rescue Quaker, named Otis (all of this took place about 3-4 years ago). Last year they rescued a 10 year old cockatoo, named Nicholas. Everybody has settled in nicely and doing well. The pecking order is Otis (quaker), Willa (parrotlet) and lastly Nicholas (cockatoo). They're done getting new birds. It's hilarious watching the interaction of these 3 misfits.....I have to admit the cockatoo freaks me out a little. I'm not used to such a big bird, with such a powerful beak!

I have to say the Quaker is the smartest of the bunch. He is a real escape artist, and an Oscar winning actor, he not only gets out of his cage, he opens the other two cages to let them out. They literally have to put a LOCK on his cage (Otis). But overall I'd still choose a parrotlet!

They are adorable! They look so happy! My friend has a rescue with a lot of big birds, it's really different. The Cockatoo are a little easier for me to handle than the Macaw, the macaws are really intimidating sometimes.

Look at that crest on Nicholas! Such a big bird! The cuties! I love the quaker/parrotlet bond, although I am surprised that the parrotlet doesn't assert it's Big Bird status. My Tumi is a BIG bird...he is certain he is the biggest thing EVER!

They are quite the threesome. The Quaker has the brains. The Cockatoo is the MOST animated, and the Parrotlet has the biggest attitude (you don't exist in my world, until I let you, and then I'll change my mind again) I've been around four different Parrotlets in our family, and they all had different personalities.

Oh, and Umbrella! One of my best bird buddies ever was an Umbrella, my "Thunder Cloud." (still miss her)

In my home we have a parrotlet, conure and a cockatoo (Lesser Sulfur-Crested)...the cockatoo believes she's the bird queen and rules the roost, but the p'let secretly plots her demise and enacts her own secret rulership, while the conure lives in her own little world, completely oblivious to all the courtly intrigue and ambitions going on around her.
