Finally I am happy to say, one chick hatched today. Should I be concerned about the temperature? Right now we are in the Spring season and the temperature is 62 degrees f. The mother is sitting on the baby chick. Is this normal behavior?

Also about the eggs. There was a clutch of seven eggs in total. Only two of them were fertile. One hatched today and the other will hatch later this week maybe. Should I remove the other non fertile eggs?

I have such limited knowledge on breeding. I would say yes it is normal for the mom to sit on the baby, my guess would be to remove the other eggs after the last one hatches.

Question

Hi. 62 degrees is a little cool, I believe. Is it 62 degrees at the nest? These are tropical birds, for the most part. I think I read somewhere that 72 degrees is the norm, but I could be mistaken.

62 degrees is the room ambient temperature. I just measured it where the mom is sitting on the eggs is 89degrees which is good and warm. What about the infertile eggs? Shall I remove them now or wait a bit longer?

Thank you for all your help

If she is past the laying phase (no more laying of eggs) and is now sitting I would be inclined to remove bad eggs. A unfertile egg that spoils can create bacteria that may hurt the hen and chicks. If I had many bad eggs I might be inclined to remove the bad eggs gradually (maybe one a day) to keep the disruption down. What you can get away with is going to depend on your bird and your relationship.

Congratulations on the chick hatching...very cool! I think what Ozzie has suggested is a good idea at this point. Good luck with the babies!
