Saffron hasn't been as chatty today and has been doing small quiet chirps. I'm also worried that it may have been something infectious since I just introduced them the other day so I'm now watching her like a hawk.

You could take her to the vet tomorrow just to check or get a necropsy on Mal. At minimum weigh her twice a day and watch her eating and drinking closely.

It's very unfortunate to hear what happened to Mal, however, she was very lucky to have you as her mother for the short time you lived together. They do wiggle into our hearts very quickly and no matter how long we've had them - losing them is always heartbreaking.
Wishing you and Saffron all the best.

My heart breaks every time I hear that one of or flock passes on, especially when there is no known reason. Was Mal all alone? Please watch your other birdie very closely. My heart.....breaks. So.....sad.

I got Mal last month as a rescue and he was still pretty much in quarantine. I was slowly introducing him and Saffron, so there was minimal contract, thankfully. I guess the one downfall to bringing home a rescue is not knowing their background or if there are any genetic or health problems. I'm watching Saffron like a hawk right now in case it was something contagious, though Mal never showed any signs of illness.
