Antibiotics...

I was at a very well known exotic bird store last week and I explained my birds problem to him. He advised me to give him some Antibiotics. I put the powder substance in my birds water. He tried it and then shook his head rapidly informing me that he does not like the taste. The powder turned the water to a yellowish color. My bird is very particular with his beverages and I have only seen him drink water and milk occasionally when I am having cereal.

My bird is not ill but just has problems with his digestive system. Are there any substitutes or ways I can trick him so he drinks the antibiotics. I am trying to avoid a trip to the vet. I have nothing against vets, but the last time I was at one, my bird died. He is very healthy outside of his bathroom habits. I felt really bad for my bird and started to give him regular water in addition to the antibiotic water. I know I shouldn't do that but I know my bird loves water and he wasn't drinking anything. I am probably worrying about nothing cause this was only for 1.5 days. The package for the antibiotic says to use for 5 days.

Please advise with any suggestions. I really appreciate it and want my bird to be somewhat normal. lol

Thanks,
Mike

The only symptom he has is that he constantly poops. He goes generally like once every 8-10 minutes. Lots of times its almost like he is squirting liquid out. He really has been doing this since we got him, but I only recently joined this forum. Other then that he is very healthy. He rarely drinks milk. Maybe once ever two weeks or so. He joins me for breakfast and will eat cereal so he occasionally drinks some milk while eating the cereal.

The owner of the bird store said that the antibiotic can't hurt him so I went with his advice. He also gave me the name of a very good avain vet as well.

My advice is NEVER administer antiobiotics except on the advice of an avian vet who has examined your bird. Besides possibly giving an antibiotic unnecessarily or giving the wrong antibiotic for a particular condition, you risk dehydrating your bird by adding it to the water. I wouldn't take the advice of a pet store owner over that of an avian vet.

Antibiotics are best delivered by a medicine dropper into the bird's mouth. As Reta said above, you risk dehydration by adding them to the water dish. Also you have no idea how much, if any, of the antibiotic your bird is receiving or if it is the right antibiotic for the illness. If there is a bacterial infection present and not enough antibiotics are given, you risk having the infection recur stronger. They are so small--it's not worth the risk. I would recommend a visit to the avian vet as soon as possible.

The indiscriminate and improper use of antibiotics is the main reason we have super antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria.

If you are giving your bird milk regularly it might be contributing to his problems as I do not think they can digest milk properly. You can, however give them a very tiny amount of unsweetened plain yogurt occasionally.

antibiotics...

Thanks for everyones replies. I only gave him the antibiotics for one day. He wouldn't go near his water. My bird is completely healthy except for his bowel movements. He has been doing this since I basically got him. Its more of a nuasance factor cause when I play with him he is always going to the bathroom on me or my clothes. lol. He only drinks milk like once every week or so. Its only when he eats cereal with me. Other water is the only other liquid he drinks.

Again thanks everyone, I am trying to upload pics, but I am having problems uploading them

Small birds do poop every 5-15 minutes, thats normal. Watery poops in an otherwise healthy bird are ussually diet related.

Concentrate on the basics, the dryer the food the dryer the poop. A good small parrot pellet, a good small parrot seed mix, some fruits and veggies that are clean and fresh. Some foods really make poop watery in p'lets, like "lettuce"

Personally I would avoid the milk and just share some dry cereal with him.

What is his basic diet?
